Prevent Home Sewage Backups in Your Home This Fall

One thing that can certainly be a nightmare for any homeowner is a sewage backup. This occurs when sewage cannot safely make its way through your home’s plumbing to its intended destination and instead ends up back inside your home. It can be disgusting, smelly, and horrifying. Thankfully, there are steps you can take this fall to prevent a sewage backup from happening.

Insulate Your Pipes

One thing you should be aware of is that the pipes in your home’s plumbing can certainly contribute to a sewage backup occurring. One way this can happen is if your pipes freeze during the winter. As ice builds and expands within the pipes, obstructions are created that will stop wastewater from safely traveling out of your house into the local sewage system or your own private septic system. The blockages can create “pressure backups” that negatively affect all kinds of plumbing systems in your home. If you want to prevent pipe freezes this fall, make sure they are properly insulated. Even a simple amount of insulation can make a big difference.

Replace Damaged or Old Pipes

You should also consider the fact that the pipes in a home, like many things, are not designed to last forever. At some point, they will need to be replaced. Pipes can corrode over time. They can even collapse completely, and this can lead to serious issues such as sewage backups or even flooding inside your home. You can inspect your pipes yourself and look for telltale signs they are failing, such as rust, bad smells, and even lack of water pressure. If you can, replace these pipes during the fall so they don’t become an issue later during the winter.

Watch What You Flush

You should also watch how you use your septic system. You shouldn’t abuse it. Flushing the wrong things down your toilet and dumping the wrong things down your drains can certainly help create a situation in which a septic backup occurs. This includes items like:

  • Diapers
  • Chemicals
  • Feminine pads
  • Food
  • Grease
  • Hair
  • Oil
  • Plastic
  • Tampons

Simply flushing normal waste and toilet paper can do a great deal to prevent a sewage backup from occurring. Also consider what you drain down the sinks in your kitchen and bathrooms. Just because it’s more convenient to pour something down the drain does not mean it’s a good idea at all.
